Discovery Executive vs Momentum Summit

Top-tier comprehensive cover compared, plan structure to wellness.

By Martin Janse van Rensburg, Sales Manager and Financial Advisor · Reviewed by Roxanne Hurter-Ehlers

The Discovery Executive Plan and the Momentum Summit Option are the top-tier comprehensive plans on their respective schemes. Both give unlimited cover in any private hospital, extensive day-to-day benefits and chronic cover that goes beyond the legal minimum. They are aimed at members who want the broadest possible cover and the freedom to use any provider. This is an independent overview by an FSCA-registered broker (FSP 44098) accredited on both schemes.

The key differences

Day-to-day after your savings run out. Both plans start with a savings pot for everyday claims. The structural difference is what happens once it is used up. On the Executive Plan, once you cross the Annual Threshold the Above Threshold Benefit pays remaining day-to-day claims with no overall limit. On Summit, the extended cover that resumes after the threshold is subject to an overall day-to-day limit. For very heavy day-to-day users, that distinction matters.

Specialist shortfalls. Both pay in-hospital specialists in full where an arrangement exists, and a high multiple of the scheme rate otherwise. The exact multiple differs between the two schemes, which affects your exposure to specialist shortfalls. Gap cover is worth considering on either plan.

International cover. Both include international travel cover, but Discovery's tends to have broader eligibility, while Summit applies exclusions such as age limits and certain health conditions. If you travel often, read the eligibility terms carefully.

Rewards. Vitality and Multiply are both optional, separately priced loyalty and wellness programmes, not medical-scheme benefits. Choose based on which rewards and partners you would actually use, not as a reason to pick the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Executive Plan and Summit really unlimited in hospital?

Both cover private hospitalisation in any private hospital with no overall annual limit, at the scheme rate. The area to watch is not the hospital account itself but specialist fees that exceed the scheme rate, which is why many top-plan members also hold gap cover.

Which has better day-to-day cover?

Both use a savings-plus-threshold structure. The Executive Plan's above-threshold day-to-day cover is unlimited, whereas Summit's extended cover is subject to an overall limit. For most members both are generous; for very high day-to-day spenders the Executive structure can go further.

Do I need Vitality or Multiply to be on these plans?

No. Vitality and Multiply are optional, separately priced programmes. You can be on the Executive Plan or Summit without them. They add rewards and wellness incentives but are not part of your medical cover.
