Editorial Standards: How We Research, Write and Review Our Guides

Curemed publishes guides on medical aid, Gap Cover and related financial products for people in South Africa. Because these guides can affect decisions about health cover and money, we hold them to the standards below. This page explains how a guide is researched, written, reviewed, dated and corrected.

In short

  • Every figure comes from a named, dated primary source: a medical scheme, insurer, regulator or the law itself.
  • Each guide names its author and its reviewer, and shows the date it was last reviewed.
  • We do not rank providers or use claims such as “best” or “leading” about ourselves.
  • We correct errors and say what changed. See our corrections policy.

Where do our figures come from?

Contributions, premiums, benefit limits and regulated amounts are taken from the documents the scheme, insurer or regulator publishes: contribution tables, brochures, Council for Medical Schemes circulars, Government Gazette notices, SARS publications and the legislation. Where a figure is our own calculation, for example a percentage increase worked out from two published tables, we say so. If we cannot verify a figure from a primary source, we leave it out rather than estimate it, and where useful we say that it has not been published.

Who writes and reviews the guides?

Guides are published under the name of a Curemed Advisor, currently Hagop Jaghlassian or Martin Janse van Rensburg, whose qualifications are on their author pages. Every guide, and every material change to a guide, is reviewed by Roxanne Hurter-Ehlers, Director of People and Governance, for regulatory accuracy and fair presentation before it is published.

How do we keep guides current?

Medical scheme contributions and benefits change every year, usually from 1 January, and some regulated limits change on 1 April. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed, and figures in the text carry their own dates. When schemes publish new contributions, we update the affected guides and show both years until the new year starts.

How do we handle conflicts of interest?

Curemed is an authorised financial services provider (FSP 44098) and an accredited brokerage (Council for Medical Schemes ORG 163). We earn commission from medical schemes and insurers on products we place, and we sell a Curemed branded Gap Cover range administered by Total Risk Administrators. See how Curemed is paid as a broker. Our guides present scheme and provider figures without ranking, name competing products where relevant, and disclose our own products where they appear. Our conflict of interest management policy is published on our policies page.

What our guides are not

Our guides are general information, not financial advice for your circumstances. Advice requires a needs analysis under the FAIS Act, and if you take out a product as a result of advice, you are entitled to a written record of that advice. The rules of each medical scheme and the wording of each policy take precedence over our summaries.

How to tell us about a mistake

If you think something in a guide is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] with the page and the source you are relying on. Our corrections policy explains what happens next.
