Covid-19 update and info

Changing our ways have been of utmost importance since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, we should all stay updated with info and keep safe in this time.

As the infections in South-Africa are rising and we are trying to return to normal by opening businesses and more pupils are going back to school, we need to make sure we stay safe and understand this pandemic.  Here is some updates and information.

What is Coronavirus (Covid-19)?

  • Coronavirus (Covid-19) is an illness caused by a virus that can spread from person to person

What are the symptoms of Covid-19?

  • The most common symptoms of the disease are fever, cough & shortness of breath

Why is everyone so worried?

  • It is a new virus
  • There are still things not known about it
  • It is highly contagious and spreads fast
  • No vaccine is currently available to protect you against Covid-19.

How is Covid-19 spread?

  • Infection can occur when coming into close contact (about 6 feet or two arm lengths) with a person who has Covid-19
  • Respiratory droplets can infect you when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks
  • By touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes can also infect you

How do you protect yourself and others from Covid-19?

  • The best way to protect yourself is to avoid being exposed to the virus.
  • Home Stay is recommended
  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth when in public
  • Disinfect touched surfaces regularly
  • Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol

Where can you get tested?

  • If you think you might have contracted the virus, you can call the NICD helpline (0800 029 999) and you will be advised on possible testing facilities. However, at this stage testing is only available to patients who have been assessed by their doctor or healthcare provider, and if they determined a Covid-19 test is necessary.

Who is at risk?

  • Everyone is at risk of getting Covid-19
  • Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for more severe illness

What does my medical aid cover?

  • The Council of Medical Schemes issued a circular classifying all Covid-19 cases as part of Prescribed Minimum Benefits
  • Most schemes will pay for the test out of high risk if you test positive
  • Some schemes will pay for the test out of high risk even if you test negative if the necessity of the test was determined by the scheme
