Plan structures
Discovery's 25 plans are grouped into 5 plan ranges. Each range has multiple variants (Classic, Essential, Coastal, Delta) which differ by network and benefit depth. Momentum's six plans (Ingwe → Summit) progress from entry-level network cover through to top-tier comprehensive cover. Discovery's structure suits members who want very granular plan choice; Momentum's structure suits members who want a clearer ladder.
Hospital network and day-to-day benefits
Discovery's higher-tier plans (Priority and above) include access to any private hospital, while KeyCare and some Smart Saver plans use the Discovery hospital network. Day-to-day benefits on Discovery come through a Medical Savings Account plus, on Comprehensive plans, an Above Threshold Benefit that pays after the savings is exhausted. Momentum's hospital cover varies by provider choice (Evolve, Associated, or Any) on most plans; day-to-day benefits come through a Medical Savings Account on most plans, with Extender and Summit adding above-savings cover.
Chronic medication and PMB cover
Both schemes cover the 26 Chronic Disease List (CDL) conditions in full on every plan, as required by the Medical Schemes Act. Discovery extends chronic cover beyond the 26 CDL conditions on Comprehensive and Executive plans. Momentum's Extender and Summit plans similarly extend chronic cover. Members with multiple chronic conditions should compare which extended chronic conditions each plan covers.
Family cover and maternity benefits
Both schemes offer family-tier pricing. Discovery and Momentum both include maternity benefits (antenatal visits, scans, delivery) on most plans, with higher-tier plans offering richer maternity and childhood benefits. Members planning a family should compare specific maternity benefits, dependant rates and child-dependant doctor visits.
Value-added programmes: Vitality vs HealthReturns
Discovery Vitality is a separate paid subscription that rewards healthy behaviours (exercise, screenings, nutrition tracking) with discounts on partner products and travel. Momentum HealthReturns is included free on most Momentum plans and pays cash back into a HealthSaver account for healthy behaviours. The two programmes work differently and members value them differently depending on their lifestyle.
Waiting periods and late joiner penalties
Both schemes apply the standard CMS-regulated waiting periods (up to 3 months general, up to 12 months condition-specific) and the late joiner penalty (LJP) framework for members joining after age 35 without sufficient prior cover. The rules are statutory. Both schemes apply them the same way.
Who Discovery suits best
Members who want the widest plan choice, the largest hospital network at the higher tiers, integration with the Vitality wellness programme, and access to Discovery's broader health-tech tools (Discovery Connect, HealthID).
Who Momentum suits best
Members who want a simpler plan ladder with clear progression, the HealthReturns rewards programme included on most plans, and the flexibility of choosing between Evolve, Associated and Any-provider hospital networks across plan tiers.
How a broker helps decide
A registered broker conducts a needs-analysis (required under the FAIS Act) covering your health needs, chronic conditions, family composition and hospital preferences, then maps those needs to the specific Discovery or Momentum plan that fits best. The broker also handles application paperwork, plan changes and claims support throughout the year. Curemed is FSP 44098 and accredited by CMS as ORG 163. See our credentials.
Frequently asked questions about Discovery vs Momentum
Which scheme is larger: Discovery or Momentum?
Discovery Health Medical Scheme is South Africa's largest open medical scheme by beneficiary count. Momentum Medical Scheme is a mid-sized open scheme.
Do both schemes cover the same chronic conditions?
Both schemes cover the 26 Chronic Disease List (CDL) conditions in full on every plan, as required by the Medical Schemes Act. Higher-tier plans on both schemes extend chronic cover beyond the 26 CDL conditions, but the specific extended conditions differ between Discovery and Momentum, so members with chronic conditions should check both lists.
Can I have Vitality and HealthReturns at the same time?
No, each programme is tied to its parent scheme. If you are on Discovery you can subscribe to Vitality; if you are on Momentum you have access to HealthReturns. You cannot belong to two open medical schemes at the same time.
Is it easier to switch from Discovery to Momentum or the other way around?
Switching either direction follows the same CMS process. Members usually have to serve waiting periods on the new scheme unless they switch within 90 days of leaving the previous scheme and meet certain conditions. A broker can review whether a switch makes sense and handle the paperwork.
Which scheme is better for a young family?
Both schemes have plans designed for young families. The right answer depends on hospital preference, chronic medication needs, maternity benefits and budget. A Curemed adviser can run a side-by-side comparison against your family's specific needs at no cost.
