Mental Health Awareness

Education on Mental Health is necessary

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is important for us to educate ourselves on this matter by reading about it and not subjecting to the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often subjected to.  Always be respectful of those living with mental illness.

Learning and sharing the facts about mental health, reaching out and helping them access mental health services, and treating them with respect is one way to do something rather than nothing.

Mental illness is a health condition involving changes in emotion, thinking, or behavior.  Mental Illness is common.

Common Mental health problems are depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and job stress.  Take mental illness seriously at work, all employers need to meet the needs of all their employees and offer things such as mental health first aid as mental health has a direct impact on the workplace through increase absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased costs.

Mental Illness can be treated but few South Africans seek the help and treatment needed.

Environmental, social, biological, and psychological factors are the result of mental health problems.  Key factors include workload, unpleasant tasks, lack of recognition, poor interpersonal relationships, poor working conditions, and conflicting home and work demands.

Evidence shows that work context can play a big role in the development of mental health problems.

Mental health problems have nothing to do with being lazy or weak.  Many factors contribute, including physical illness, injury, or brain chemistry.

More than 400 million people worldwide suffer from mental disorders or from psychosocial problems, but this can be treated or prevented by visiting your nearest clinic or doctor.

Mental and brain disorders vary in from less serious to extremity.

Transient – acute stress disorder

Periodic – bipolar disorder

Long-Lasting and progressive – Alzheimer’s disease

Other conditions – Schizophrenia, Dementia, Depressive disorder, Panic disorder

We ask that all support and advocate mental health in real life and online.  Spread awareness every day of the year as people live with mental illness every day of their lives.  Believe that we can make a difference and support the awareness of mental illness.
